Boliden Somincor Breaks Ground on Portugal’s Largest-Ever Solar Plant in Partnership with EDP and Greenvolt
Swedish mining giant Boliden has partnered with EDP and the Greenvolt Group to install a 49 MWp solar generation unit adjacent to the Neves-Corvo mine in Castro Verde, Alentejo — the largest self-consumption solar project ever developed in Portugal. Once operational in the second half of 2026, the plant will produce close to 100 GWh of electricity annually and cut Boliden Somincor’s CO² emissions by more than 41,000 tonnes per year, marking a landmark step in the decarbonisation of one of Europe’s largest zinc-copper operations.
